Huddle Yourself Daily: The Benefits of Daily Scrum

A daily Scrum, or a daily huddle, is beneficial in a professional environment because it enables transparency about the progress achieved in the duration of developing a product; but what about personally? What if we started the day also asking ourselves the same questions? What did I do yesterday? What am I doing today? Are there any impediments? We always task ourselves anyway, and sometimes we forget to give ourselves credit for what we have already done and become surprised when we have a hitch in our aspirations for things we would like to complete. In my own aspiration to spare myself the weight of impediments in my own daily accomplishment, I am going to try and adapt another Agile methodology to my life: my personal daily Scrum.


Although this is not Agile, the five P's always prevail in my life (Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance), and I'd like to take that a step further. "Scrum", in its own definition, is a term used in Rugby for a huddle when a team is getting ready to pull off something hopefully glorious. I am going to start by planning on making my tasks for the day with the hopes of the same outcome and starting with the positive.


So, we will do my daily Scrum for the day for the purpose of testing my theory that it will breed success. Question one: What did I accomplish yesterday? Well, I got my daughter ready, I got my eyes checked and ordered new glasses, I went and picked up things needed from the store, I made Haleem, and l watched Rocketman with my family. I must say, I feel pretty accomplished, yay me! Question two: What am I doing today? I am picking up the things I forgot at the store yesterday, doing laundry, making breakfast for everyone, getting dinner ready, and getting the husband ready for his trip this week. Question three: Any impediments? Only a couple of things may stand in my way from moving my mountain today: 1. Laundry taking up a lot of time

2. Thawing out the meat for dinner

As for laundry taking up a lot of time, I'm taking it in stride (there's always tomorrow right?), and for thawing out the meat, I'm already on it.


In doing this small exercise for the day, I've given myself a pat on the back for yesterday, I've lined up my goals for the day, and I already know which teeny tiny monsters may stand in my way from conquering my day. Since most of us humans have foggy brain and sleepy eyes in the morning before coffee, I'm going to set an alarm daily to remind myself to do my own personal daily Scrum; wish me luck Agilists!
